What are eternity rings?
An
eternity ring is a symbol of everlasting love; a promise in the
physical form of precious stones and metal to love someone forever. It's
considered a beautifully endearing way to remind someone after perhaps
years of marriage, that you still care or to symbolise a parent's love
for their newborn child.
Eternity rings aren't just any ordinary
type of ring with a diamond on it. They are, in fact, a single band
which has small diamonds or other stones around the circumference of the
entire ring. Each stone should have the same shape and be the same size
for a uniform look. This allows the band to become a ring of diamonds
with no beginning or end. The continuous stretch of diamonds is
symbolic, representing a never-ending love. Yet, this design of having
the diamonds all the way round could make it uncomfortable or awkward to
wear, which is why jewellers developed an alternative ring known as
'half-eternity'.
This features stones across the face of the ring
only. Some might favour the half ring more as a full one cannot usually
be adjusted for finger size and they need to be custom ordered or made.
Half rings can be easily sized, making them more economical as well as
more comfortable.
As a result, full diamond eternity rings are
significantly more expensive than half rings. A full ring costs around
two to three times the price of a half ring because of the number of
diamonds.
Who are they for?
Eternity rings are a gift
for life as a sign of commitment and eternal love. They are to be given
to loved ones and, in most cases, women. They are rings typically
designed for women and are often given to mark a special wedding
anniversary such as a 10 year, 20 year or 25th year anniversary. A
popular anniversary on which to give a loved one this special piece of
jewellery is the ruby (40th) anniversary.
Others believe that the
birth of a first child is the time to give your wife or girlfriend an
eternity ring to symbolise the everlasting love for each other and the
new addition to the family. Birthstone accents can then be added should
you want a more unique and personal ring. They are also commonly worn on
the ring finger to accompany the wedding ring or other symbolic rings.
It is very much up to the individual to decide when to give an such a
gift.
Eternity rings have evolved significantly from their humble
beginnings as a band of diamonds and can now be found in a range of
different styles and designs, colours and finishes. This means you can
easily find one to suit your loved one; from delicate and understated to
bold and daring.
